From Middle Irish fíarfaigid, íarfaigid, from Old Irish ·íarfaig, prototonic form of íarmi·foig, i.e. íarmi- + fo- + ·saig (seek out), from Proto-Celtic *eɸirom + *uɸo + *sagyo- (to seek), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁epi + *upo + *seh₂g- (to seek).
