Etymology

[edit]

Orel claims it is borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin fossa (ditch, moat).[1] However, Çabej identifies it as an inherited word from Proto-Albanian *pl̥thu̯iām.[2][3] Matasović claims it has no known etymology.[4] Possibly from Arabic فُسْحَة (fusḥa, wide, spatious place).
