[edit]From Old Norse gjǫlnar f pl, from Proto-Germanic *gelunō, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel-, distantly related to Ancient Greek χεῖλος (kheîlos, “snout, beak, lip”). Cognate with English gill, Danish gælle and Norwegian gjelle.
