From Ottoman Turkish گونش(güneş, sun, sunlight), from Proto-Turkic *küneĺ (sun, sunny place). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰛𐰈𐰤𐰾(küneš, sunshine, sunny place), Chuvash хӗвел (hĕvel, sun).
