Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician and Old Portuguese guaannar, gaannar, gãar, from local Medieval Latin ganare (to acquire) from Gothic *𐌲𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌽 (*ganan, to covet); and Vulgar Latin *wadaniō, *wadaniāre, from Proto-Germanic *waiþanjaną, related to Proto-Germanic *waiþiz, *waiþī, *waiþō, *waiþijō (pasture, field, hunting ground).

Compare Portuguese ganhar, Catalan guanyar, Occitan ganhar, French gagner, Italian guadagnare, cf. also Spanish ganar.[1]
