[edit]From a Vulgar Latin root *cavula, diminutive of Late Latin cava, from Latin cavus, cavum, or reformed through *găuri, the plural of a hypothetical earlier Romanian *gău, from cavus. Cf. zgău. Compare also Aromanian gavrã; cf. Albanian gavër.
