From Middle High German gedīhen, from Old High German githīhan, from Proto-West Germanic *gaþį̄han, from Proto-Germanic *gaþinhaną; cognates include Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌸𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (gaþeihan), Dutch gedijen. A prefixed variant of Middle High German dīhen, from Old High German thīhan, from Proto-West Germanic *þį̄han, from Proto-Germanic *þinhaną. Compare with obsolete English thee (to thrive).
