Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ᾰ̔μᾰμηλῐ́ς (hamamēlís), coined by Jan Frederik Gronovius; composed of ἅμα (háma, together) and μῆλον (mêlon, fruit, apple).
