Etymology[edit]

From Sicilian lefanti, liafanti and/or Italian elefanti, both from Latin elephas, from Ancient Greek ἐλέφας (eléphas). The form was apparently influenced by ljun (lion), both being foreign animals known to the (earlier) Maltese only by hearsay.
