Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ارتكاب (irtikâb), from Arabic اِرْتِكَاب (irtikāb, “committing (a crime, sin, etc.)”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]irtikâp (definite accusative irtikâbı, plural irtikâplar)
- (law) Abuse of public office for personal gain; an act of corruption by a public official, especially by using their position to solicit or accept bribes.
Usage notes
[edit]- In Turkish Penal Code (Türk Ceza Kanunu), it is different from rüşvet (bribery) in that the initiative often comes from the public official rather than the briber.
