German[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Köln +‎ -isch; Middle High German kölnisch (variae lectiones: kolnsch, köllisch, kolsch)

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Adjective[edit]

kölnisch (strong nominative masculine singular kölnischer, not comparable)

  1. (dated, relational) of Cologne (city in Germany)
    Synonym: Kölner

Usage notes[edit]

  • At least in the Rhineland itself, this form is now virtually unused and only found in fixed names (of associations, companies, etc.). Only Kölner and kölsch are used, with the former referring generally to the city and its inhabitants, while the latter tends to have a more cultural, traditional connotation.
