From Proto-Slavic *kamy, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *akmō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱmō. Cognates include Latvian akmens, Lithuanian akmuo, Ancient Greek ἄκμων(ákmōn, anvil, pestle, battering ram) and Sanskrit अश्मन्(aśman, stone, hammer, thunderbolt).
