From Proto-Albanian *karpā, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp- (“to pluck”). Compare Lithuanian kar̃pas (“hack, notch”), Swedish harv (“harrow”), Ancient Greek καρπός (karpós, “fruit”). See also the name of the Carpathians.
