Latvian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Old East Slavic красьнъ (krasĭnŭ, beautiful) (compare Russian кра́сный (krásnyj, red)), from the same Proto-Indo-European stem as krāsa (color) (q.v.). Borrowed before the 13th century in the form krāsns (first mentioned in 16th- and 17th-century sources), it became krāšņs in the second half of the 18th century, with a palatalized šņ either because of its adverbial form krāšņi, from krāsni, or because of the influence of Russian красный (krasnyj), perhaps re-borrowed as *krāsnij; in either case, the preceding i would have been the cause of the palatalization.[1]
