Albanian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

  • indefinite singular: krahë (m.; Tosk, Arvanitic, Gheg), kra ([kɾaː])
  • definite singular: krahi (Gheg, Old Albanian), kraha (f.; Bardhi)

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *krau, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱreh₂u, *ḱrh₂eu (limb). Close to Latin crūs.[1] Alternatively from archaic krahi, definite krai (Buzuku), from South Slavic *krajь (end; rim, edge; region) (cf. Serbo-Croatian krȃj, Bulgarian край (kraj)). Similar sense development in Bulgarian край (kraj), крайник (krajnik), краиште (kraište), all meaning ‘limb’.[2]
