Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably linked to the verb la. Possibly from Vulgar Latin root *lavōnem (washhouse), from Latin lavō or with the creative suffix -un. Another less likely theory suggets Latin leōnem, from leō (see leu). [1] See also Lăunele, the name of a river in Oltenia, Romania.
