From Middle Breton loet, loüet, from Old Breton loit, from Proto-Brythonic *lluɨd, from Proto-Celtic *ɸleitos. Cognate with Cornish loos, Irish and Scottish Gaelic liath, Manx lheeah, and Welsh llwyd.
