[edit]Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 墨 (“ink”, SV: mặc). Doublet of mực (“ink”).
Ink lines (dây mực) are traditionally used in medieval Vietnam (as well as East Asia) as reference lines, hence the shift in meaning.
