Etymology

[edit]

From Old Norse nǫkkurr, contracted from ne veit ek hverr (I don't know which one). Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk nokon.

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈnoːˌɡɔt/, /ˈnɔt/
  • Audio:(file)

något n (genitive någots, common någon, plural några)

  1. any, some, anything, something (neuter form of någon)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The common form is also used for "someone/anyone", "somebody/anybody".
  • No genitive appears in SAOL, but någots / nåts sometimes sounds natural, like in "sjunga någots lov" (sing the praises of something).
