Old Norse[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier nakkvarr, from Proto-Norse *ᚾᛁ ᚹᚨᛁᛏ ᛖᚲ ᚺᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*ni wait ek hwarjaʀ, literally not-know-I-who), equivalent to + veit + ek + hverr. Compare Latin nescio quis (I don't know who), i.e., "somebody". Development should have included intermediary stage *ᚾᚨᛁᛏᚲᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*naitkwarjaʀ).
