From an Old Northern French variant of Old French noce, noces, from Vulgar Latin *noptiās, an alteration of Latin nuptiās, from nupta (bride, wife), perfect participle of nūbō, nūbere (marry, wed), from Proto-Indo-European *snewbʰo- (to marry, to wed). Compare French noces.
