From Proto-Loloish *ŋa², from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ŋa², from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋja. Cognate with Nuosu ꉛ (hxe), Burmese ငါး (nga:), Chinese 魚 (OC *ŋa), Tibetan ཉ (nya), Chepang ङाः (ŋaʔ), Drung ngv'plaq, Yamphu ङा (ŋa), Western Tamang तर्ङ (tarŋa).
