From Proto-Loloish *ŋa², from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ŋa², from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋja. Cognate with Nuosu (hxe), Burmese ငါး (nga:), Chinese (OC *ŋa), Tibetan (nya), Chepang ङाः (ŋaʔ), Drung ngv'plaq, Yamphu ङा (ŋa), Western Tamang तर्‌ङ (tarŋa).
