Usage notes[edit]

Before the spelling reform of 1998, an adjectival participle could be negated with this prefix only when used as an adjective, e.g. niepijący ‎(teetotal), as opposed to being used as a participle, e.g. nie pijący ‎(not drinking (at the time)), in which case it should use a standalone nie. The reform permitted attaching nie to the participle in both cases. [1]
