From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *nipis, from Proto-Austronesian *Nipis. Cognate with Malay nipis, Eastern Cham ꨤꨪꨚꨪꩍ (lipih), ꨤꨚꨪꩍ (lapih), Chamorro kanifes.
