Etymology

From nkhúngu (rust) +‎ lupsa (ashes of burnt grass). Altogether, it means "rust on burnt grass", because the charred remains resemble rust on a knife. Cognate with Yao (Africa) ngungulupya (ashes of burnt grass left on the plain).
