[edit]From nkhúngu (“rust”) + lupsa (“ashes of burnt grass”). Altogether, it means "rust on burnt grass", because the charred remains resemble rust on a knife. Cognate with Yao (Africa) ngungulupya (“ashes of burnt grass left on the plain”).
