Etymology[edit]

From Old Occitan [Term?] (compare Occitan dobertura, obertura), from Vulgar Latin *obertūra (compare French ouverture), from Latin apertūra (compare Spanish abertura). Equivalent to obert +‎ -ura. Doublet of the borrowed variant apertura. The sense of "aperture" was a later learned development or borrowing.
