Inherited from Malay pandai, from Old Javanese paṇḍe, paṇḍay (skilled worker; smith), from Prakrit paṁḍia, from Sanskrit पाण्ड्यः (pāṇḍyaḥ, best of the learned), पाण्डित्य (pāṇḍitya, cleverness) or पण्डित (paṇḍita). Doublet of pandita and pendeta.
