From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English pottere, from late (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English pottere (potter), equivalent to pot +‎ -er, influenced by (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French potier (potter). More at pot. Displaced Old English crocwyrhta (crock-wright).
