French[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Vulgar Latin *putrīre, from Latin putrēre, present active infinitive of putreō, with conjugation from putrēscēre, present active infinitive of putrēscō.
Pronunciation[edit]
Verb[edit]
pourrir
- (chiefly intransitive) to rot, decompose, putrefy, crumble
- (intransitive) to waste away from a disease such as gangrene
Conjugation[edit]
This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
