Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Late Latin procopē, via Ancient Greek προκοπή (prokopḗ) from verb προκόπτω (prokóptō, to cut away in front; forward, advance), προ- (pro-, before; in front) +‎ κόπτω (kóptō, to cut).
