    • 1869, The British Quarterly Review, Hodder and Stoughton, volume L, pages 54-55:
      Many a writer of the middle ages refers to the exquisite singing of the nuns, who, under the superintendence of the præcentrix, occupied their respective stalls, which were opposite each other, and the service was chanted by alternative choirs, the præcentrix, who occupied the stall opposite the superior, leading, just as the precentor leads in cathedrals.
