Etymology 1[edit]

Uncertain; older form (late Old Norse) rœma. According to Ásgeir Blöndal Magnússon probably borrowed from Middle Low German rēme, or perhaps, as proposed by F. Holthausen, from Proto-Germanic *rōhmijǭ and related to Swedish rōm, rōma and Sanskrit रश्मि (raśmí). Compare also reim and rammi.
