The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., from Latin rādere, present active infinitive of rādō, from Proto-Italic *razdō, from Proto-Indo-European *rh₁d-dʰ-, extended from *reh₁d- (“to scrape, scratch, gnaw”).
