German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from French réaliser. Compare Hunsrik rëaliseere. The sense “to become aware of” is a semantic loan from English realize.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˌʁeːaliˈziːʁən/
  • (file)
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

realisieren (weak, third-person singular present realisiert, past tense realisierte, past participle realisiert, auxiliary haben)

  1. to realize (to make real, to implement)
    Synonym: verwirklichen
  2. (colloquial) to realize, to understand (to become aware of)
    Synonyms: erkennen; see also Thesaurus:begreifen

Usage notes[edit]

  • The sense “become aware of” may not by all speakers be regarded as natural, idiomatic German. As an anglicism it may also be frowned upon by purists. This sense is colloquially rather common, however.
