Inherited from Vulgar Latin *reiectāre, from Latin reiectus (thrown back; rejected), perfect passive participle of reiciō (to throw back; to repel; to reject), from re- (re-) + iaciō (to throw; to hurl). Cognate with Galician rexeitar.
