First attested 1335[1]; borrowed from Old Catalan and Occitan or Old Provençal salvatge, sauvatge, from Vulgar Latin salvāticus, alteration of Latin silvāticus (wild"; literally, "of the woods), from silva (forest", "grove). Doublet of selvático.
