    Inherited from Middle High German schāch mat, from Classical Persian شَاه‌مَات (šāh-māt). By surface analysis, Schach +‎ matt. The alternative form with intervening und is also already attested as Middle High German schāch unde mat. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
