From ecclesiastical (medieval) Ancient Greek σκήτη (skḗtē), which is either from a place name in Egypt Σκήτις, Coptic Ϣⲓϩⲏⲧ (Šihēt), or from a corruption of ἀσκητής (askētḗs, ascetic; monk, hermit).
