Etymology[edit]

Coined by British comedian and writer Rob Newman in 2006, in his stage show There Is No Planet B: A history of the world backwards.[1][2] In 2007, Newman performed a song called No Planet B at Heathrow Climate Camp, after which activists painted the phrase on placards, first at the Heathrow Climate Camp, and then at COP15 in Copenhagen. The phrase was later popularized by British researcher and writer Mike Berners-Lee in his 2019 book There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years. It is a play on words based on the phrase "there is no plan B".
