From Middle English thurhgon, from Old English þurhgān (to go through, go over, pass through, pierce, penetrate, permeate, pervade), equivalent to thorough- +‎ go. Cognate with Dutch doorgaan (to go on, continue, go through, proceed), German durchgehen (to go through, pass through).
