From Proto-Germanic *timrijaną, derived from *timrą (“timber”) (Old English timber) + *-janą. Cognate with Old Frisian timbra, Old Saxon timbrian, Old High German zimbaren, Gothic 𐍄𐌹𐌼𐍂𐌾𐌰𐌽 (timrjan).
