Etymology
[edit]From Middle Vietnamese blang (“moon”), from Proto-Vietic *b-laŋ (“moon”). This is the Central-Southern form, now also the most common written form. See giai for the sound changes.
The Northern Middle Vietnamese form is attested as blang in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
False cognate of Proto-Austronesian *bulaN (“moon”) and Proto-Tai *ɓlɯənᴬ (“moon”).
