1. (mineralogy) A ferric hydrate, 2Fe₂O₃H₂O, closely related to hematite and limonite.

   Synonyms: esmeraldite, hydrohematite, lepidocrocite

   • 1969, Geophysical Abstracts, numbers 268-271, page 679:

     The Bakal' deposit is a relatively rare type of iron deposit; the ores are siderites, grading in the oxidized zone into brown ironstones and turgites.

   • 1937, Charles Freeman Jackson, Eugene Delos Gardner, Stoping Methods and Cost, number 391, page 50:

     The fibrous mineral turgite is variable in composition, and considerable evidence is given that it probably represents solid solutions of goethite with hematite with enclosed and capillary water.
