From Proto-Vietic *vaɲʔ (to twist), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *wiɲ ~ *wiiɲ ~ *wəɲ ~ *waɲʔ (to twist, turn, go round). Cognate with Muong Bi wãnh, Proto-Katuic *waɲ (to twist, wring) (whence Pacoh véinh).
