From Latin vallum (“wall, rampart, entrenchment, palisade”), from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (“to turn, wind, roll”). Cognate with Catalan val, Galician and Portuguese valo, Spanish valla, Italian vallo. Compare also English wall.
