Etymology

Probably borrowed from Serbo-Croatian zastava or Slovene zastava. For the sound change /st/ > /sl/, compare poroszló and boroszlán. Compare Slovak zástava. First attested in 1086.^[1]^[2]

There are two types of possessive forms. The form with stem change is mainly used in the case of an inalienable possession, such as the flag of a country or an organisation. To express that a person has a flag, the form without stem change is used (although in some dialects, the form with stem change is used in all situations). Therefore, the form zászlajam is rarely encountered, except in dialects.
