From Proto-Athabaskan *-nə-čįxʸ (nose). Cognate with Ahtna -ntsiis, Koyukon -əntsəyh, Gwich'in -antsį́h, Carrier -nintsis, Tsuut'ina -́tsíh.

Related to the root -CHĄ́Ą́ʼ (to smell).
