From вой- (voj-) +‎ -ева́ть (-evátʹ), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *vojevati, based on the root of во́ин (vóin, soldier) (compare Proto-Slavic *vojь (soldier), Old East Slavic вои pl (voi, soldiers)).
