Inherited from Old East Slavic смьрьчь (smĭrĭčĭ, “cloud”). Cognates include сморка́ть (smorkátʹ, “to blow one's nose”), морок (morok, “darkness, cloud, fog”) and мрак (mrak, “darkness”).
