From Proto-Permic *ɔlni, from Proto-Uralic *elä-. Cognates include Finnish elää and Tundra Nenets илесь (yilyesʹ°).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian овны (ovny) and Komi-Yazva олнө (olnå).
